So, I LOVE Miami Spice. For two months, literally hundreds of Miami's best restaurants put together fixed menus that are actually affordable. So for two months, every birthday/anniversary/the-kids-are-finally-back-in-school celebration takes place at a Miami Spice restaurant 🎉 Today, it was a friend's birthday celebration at The Sarsaparilla Club at the Shelbourne Hotel.

Of course, I spent days staring at Sarsaparilla's Miami Spice menu in anticipation, and here it was in all it's glory. I could not wait.

First course, I chose the crispy mushroom steamed buns. Um wow. These were awesome. The buns were so darn soft, filled with crispy mushrooms and onions...mmmm. Not a single little crispy anything was left behind. By far, no competition, the best dish of the night.

My husband went rogue and ordered the ribeye special. The plate looked beautiful, but unfortunately, it just didn't work. The meat was dry (sacrilege, particularly on a medium rare steak). And there was just too much stuff on it. Disappointing.

For my main dish, I had the short rib meatloaf. Sounded amazing, was not amazing. Similarly to the steak, there was a lot happening on this plate but it didn't work. The meat was "falling off the bone" soft, the curry it was paired with was tasty, but it just kind of fell flat. It was okay 🙈

The birthday girl ordered the Moroccan BBQ salmon. Kind of the same story over and over. A lot happening on this plate, but it didn't come together the way I hoped it would.

Interestingly, the best main dish of the night was also the simplest. A friend ordered the Sarsaparilla fried chicken. Wise woman that one. Much better than my meal. The chicken was fried perfectly and had a kick of spice. Very tasty.

For dessert, I had the banana and walnut cake paired with salted dulce de leche. Meh. The salted dulce de leche was delicious, but it was a tiny component of this dessert and was overpowered by all that whipped cream. Not the best way to end the night. Unfortunately (I feel like I've used that word a lot tonight) I can't see myself returning to Sarsaparilla. It was an average meal at a not so average price. Disappointing.
