Food: 3.5/5

Ambiance: 3/5

Service: 1/5

We begin at Chef Jean Georges' Matador Room at the EDITION hotel in Miami Beach.

So, I have two little ones. When my husband and I have a babysitter for a Saturday night, it's sacred. Babysitter arrived at 6, we were out the door at 6:03 :) Our reservation at Matador Room was at 8:30 so we had some time to kill. Hence I must discuss the awesomeness levels of the EDITION hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful, sure, but what I fell in love with was the bowling alley and ice skating rink in the basement of the hotel.

Pretty sweet to spend an hour bowling, working up an appetite and then head on over to JG's restaurant :)

Matador Room is JG's interpretation of Latin and Spanish food (tapas style so, yup, tiny portions).

I'm a fan of asking servers for recommendations. I figure they know the menu far better than I will in 10 minutes of briefing through it. Unfortunately, my experience at Matador Room began with pretty slow service. Once our server finally noticed us, he seemed to lack any excitement over the food (which makes me sad).

It took me a minute to get passed that so now that I've said my piece off we go to the food :)

We began with the sweet pea guacamole. I wasnt sure what I was going to think about someone messing with my avocados by adding peas, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The guac was smooth, had a little spice to it, and the peas added a touch of sweetness. A delicious snack to get us going.

Next came the burratta which was paired with berries and a balsamic reduction. I liked the idea but the consistency of the burratta reminded me a bit too much of ricotta. The texture was missing the creaminess I look forward to in burratta. Meh.

Then we had the fish tacos. These bad boys had some kick (which I loved!) and were all around delicious. Not the best I've had but quite good.

The star of my night (other than my hubby of course) was the truffle and fontina pizza (yowza!). The dough was razor thin (with the fontina, it almost felt the crispy dough was all cheese) and then the truffles were just truffles (and that was awesome). 😍

We had mushrooms with goat cheese (meh, it felt like a dish we could have made at home so that's all you get about that).

We ordered the arroz con pollo with high hopes. Every review I read raved about it. I felt it was pretty forgettable. Yes the crispy chicken skin was yummy and interesting texturally but the flavor of the rice and chicken was nothing I would write my Latin mom home about. It was good not great.

Now the lamb chop, that was tasty! It had a crunch on the outside and was perfectly cooked inside. Very very tasty. Wish I would have ordered two of these and skipped the arroz con pollo.

We ended our meal with a salted caramel flan. The taste of the flan was perfect (and the sea salt was a perfect addition) but for some reason it had a layer of sponge cake on the bottom (it befuddled me). That was kind of weird. I could have done without that layer.

All in all, the food was good, but it didn't knock my socks off. Sorry JG :/ I'd go back but not before I get through that excel sheet I told you all about. The journey continues...
